powerful and fast, February 16, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Acer AS5552-5898 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black) (Personal Computers) I have purchased many notebooks over the years and have many computers in my house. When it came time to upgrade to a new laptop I looked long and hard at everything out there around the $500 mark. It is very hard to find a laptop that has everything you want in one package. This one is no exception. The only thing I find puzzling is that it has a mono speaker. Thats right, only one speaker over by the power button. After some thought, I realize I never listen to anything on my laptop other than dings and random youtube videos without using my bluetooth headphones. This has bluetooth built in! There is another version of this laptop with a 2.2 processor, but a smaller hard drive for more money. Not worth the extra if you ask me. I put this as a great all around laptop. It easily handles regular surfing, mail, office apps, but has the power for photoshop and video/DVD editing when needed. The price is as good as it gets for a laptop with these specs.

4GB DDR3 Memory and 500 GB SATA hard drive (5400 RPM) -- amazing for the price ($399.99) it is being sold for on Amazon. Of course it would be nicer if it had a 7200 RPM hard drive, but still amazing.
Surfing the internet, streaming HD videos on the internet, playing older games -- all very fast. AMD Phenom(tm) II Triple-Core Processor is a nice processor for this laptop build.
Where the cost savings come in -- AMD's triple-core processors are really quad-core with one of the cores disabled/locked because it is defective. This does not affect the overall processor or the three working cores, but because of the defect it is sold by AMD at a huge discount. Unlocking the fourth core is possible but not advisable, for stability will more than likely become an issue. Also, on this particular processor you can not simply unlock it via BIOS as you may with other triple-core processors that have had their fourth core locked. This one would take... Read more

The price for the specs are amazing. Features that are uncommon at this price range: phenom II triple core cpu, wireless-N, gigabit 10/100/1000 ehternet, HD4250 radeon discrete gpu, and 64-bit windows 7! That means you can upgrade to 8gb memory RAM and the laptop will recognize it instantly. Acer is good for the way they engineer the cooling system. This laptop is no exception. I noticed the keyboard has more travel and tactile feel than the same style of keyboard on an Acer netbook (I've used the Aspire one). Not too much bloatware pre-installed, actually some useful like netflix and ebay. Black mesh has a nice feel, doesnt attract fingerprints.
CONS:
The location of dvd drive is low, meaning my right hand always touches it when I pick up the laptop. One speaker, but ehh..just get headphones. Acer likes to make the left and right click touchpad buttons as one single bar =( Directional arrow keys are kinda small.
