It is replacing a 5 year Toshiba laptop that is still going strong, but wanted to upgrade her to a newer CPU model. It's the third Toshiba laptop I've purchased (my other daughter has another 3 year old model). I stuck with Toshiba for the value (features and price), but also because I NEVER had a problem with either of the first two laptops! This one started right up out of the box and has been working fine for 3 weeks, no quirks or problems. I figure if you have luck with a brand, why change. So far our lucky streak is holding up strong. I'll be refreshing the older 5 year old model with Windows 7 and my wife has already laid a claim on it!

While at the retail store shopping for my laptop. I did have my eyes and fingers on a white Sony Vaio with similar chipset and specs but once you look past the white finish there is really nothing sony had to offer. It was really just a bland looking laptop. The Toshiba did have slighty better specs and In comparison I equally liked the black graphite fusion finish, and the visually appealing led lights of the Toshiba but it was the harman/kardon speakers that really won me over. My wife has them on her laptop and they work and sound extremely well.
For a 14" mid-range laptop they've managed to pack alot of power into it. The intel chipset and I5 processer are amazing. The 3.0 usb port was also a plus, it works really well with a 3.0 external HD I bought about 4 or 5 months ago. The blu ray player was another plus, Blu Ray movies look almost 3d on the 14" screen, on my LED monitor using HDMi, they look even better... Read more
DO NOT BUY, January 29, 2012 This review is from: Toshiba Satellite Laptop / Intel� CoreTM i5 Processor / 14" Display / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive / Blu-ray Disc Drive - Platinum (Electronics) So far, these are the issues I've ran into with this model. Instantly upon opening, I found one of the panels on the bottom hadn't been screwed in properly and so a corner of said panel was sticking out. Then, powering up and testing, I found the touchpad buttons only work 50% of the time, or 100% of the time if you press AS HARD AS YOU CAN. This includes dragging icons, right-clicking, double-clicking, and single-clicking. Half the time, icons being dragged just randomly drop, most the time into a folder you don't mean for them to. That's probably the worst problem for me, but this following one may be a huge problem for some: the battery life is less than half of what is advertised. I can get about a maximum of 2 hours out of mine.
The mouse button issue and battery issue occurred in two different computers of the same model for me.
Finally, to add to the battery issue, sometimes when unplugged and being mobile, on the Internet, if watching a Youtube video for... Read more
